If you are on a low income and need help paying your rent or council tax, you may be able to claim Housing Benefit (HB) or Council Tax Support (CTS).
We have changed the type of proof we need to support claims for HB and CTS. We no longer need original documents and will accept either electronic documents, such as scanned images or photos, or photocopies. We prefer electronic documents so we have made it easier for customers to upload their documents.
Customers should not email their documents to as this is not a secure method. Using the upload your documents form is more secure and we will e mail confirmation of the documents you have submitted, so you will know we have got them.
We have introduced new and enhanced on line services on My Tax and Benefits. The service gives access to customers 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Residents claiming HB or CTS can access the details of their claim, the payments made and download their notifications within 24 hours of a decision being made on their claim. Landlords, who get HB paid directly to them, need to make sure they are registered for My Tax and Benefits to receive notification letters about their tenant's HB.
A major project called Real Time Information (RTI) was run from late September 2014 to early March 2015. Using data sent to us by HM Revenues and Customs the project has saved over £1 million pounds of overpaid Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support. The project will continue into the next year.
