Short Breaks are provided in Merton by the
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Integrated Service (SENDIS).
Short Breaks were previously known as respite care. Short Breaks give children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities the chance to do something they enjoy. They also give parents time away from caring. A Short Break can be offered by a wide range of providers or families may choose to organise their own Short Breaks through a direct payment.
In April 2011 the Breaks for Carers of Disabled Children Regulations came into affect. These regulations require the local authority to produce a Short Breaks Statement so that families living in the authority know what services are available, the eligibility criteria for accessing these services and how the range of services are designed to meet the needs of local needs of families with disabled children. An updated Short Breaks Statement is currently being prepared.
