Council Leader, Councillor Mark Allison said: “The tragic scenes from Afghanistan as thousands of people flee in fear for their lives and those of their friends and family are truly horrendous. Merton’s community has been shocked by the frightening scenes of so many Afghans desperately fleeing the Taliban.
“We send our solidarity and support to all those affected, including Afghan and refugee communities already here in the Merton. Merton Council stands ready to help and I want to reassure residents that, while those fleeing make their escape and undergo quarantine, we are working hard with local partners and charities, other councils and the Greater London Authority, to coordinate the community’s efforts. It is important to prepare, as refugees will need a range of services, including mental as well as physical healthcare, education and, of course, housing.
“We’re extremely grateful for the offers of support already coming in from Merton’s residents, and will provide more details of exactly how to help very shortly, once the scale of what is needed is clearer. The situation on the ground is fast moving and we do not want anything to go to waste. It’s wonderful that so many people in Merton are so kind, and I’m proud that we are doing our bit to help.”
