Independent Member, Standards and General Purposes Committee

We are looking for an independent (Audit) Member, for our Standards and General Purposes Committee to assist in providing review of the Council's governance, risk management, control frameworks and financial reporting processes at the London Borough of Merton.

Successful candidates will demonstrate high ethical standards, willingness to participate in meetings, ability to take independent, unbiased and objective views based on evidence and complex documentation.  Experience of financial management would be helpful as would an understanding of corporate governance and of working in a complex organisation.

Independent Person, Standards and General Purposes Committee

Closing date for applications: 5pm on Friday 31 January 2025. Interviews are expected to be held early February 2025.

We are looking for an independent person to assist in promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct, and to consider complaints against elected councillors. You will be expected to attend meetings of the Standards and General Purposes Committee, which take place four times per year at 7.15 pm.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate experience of reviewing information to reach evidence-based conclusions, strong communication skills and strong personal ethics and high standards of probity. Experience of mediation or dispute resolution would be helpful as would knowledge of public sector ethical governance issues.

Please note that current and former (within the last 5 years) councillors, co-opted members or employees of Merton Council or their close relatives are not eligible to be appointed to these positions.
