Grand Drive Pedestrian Crossing

2nd Statutory Consultation - 28 January 2011

The Council recently carried out a formal consultation on the removal of the existing signal controlled (Pelican) crossing; the associated raised table outside No 174 Grand Drive, and the introduction of a new zebra crossing.

The consultation resulted in a number of objections. The Objections were largely related to safety concerns, that, given the level and type of traffic on Grand Drive, some drivers were likely to disregard pedestrians waiting to cross at the Zebra thereby creating a hazardous situation. The general view was that the crossing should be a signal controlled type, which by its nature carries a greater level of compliance and affords better safety for pedestrians.

As a result of the feedback, TfL (Transport for London) has now agreed that they are willing to consider the provision of a Puffin Crossing at the location where the earlier Zebra was proposed. The Council has therefore decided to proceed with the provision of a Puffin crossing rather than the Zebra. The new details are shown in the linked newsletter below. In order to take this forward (as required by regulations) the Council is now undertaking a new statutory consultation on the following measures:

  • The removal of the existing signal controlled (Pelican) crossing, and the associated raised table outside No 174 Grand Drive.
  • Provision of a new Puffin Crossing approximately 17 metres north of the existing Pelican Crossing.

1st Statutory Consultation - 18 November 2010

As you may know the site of the former St Catherine’s School on the west side of B279 Grand Drive is being redeveloped to provide residential apartments. Access to the new development is to be provided by way of a new junction adjacent to the existing pelican crossing. This necessitates the removal of the existing crossing. In response to the complaints received about the existing speed table, it is also proposed to remove the speed table.

As a replacement, it is proposed to provide a zebra crossing at the location shown in the linked news.

To undertake the above measures it is necessary for the Council to undertake the appropriate formal consultation.

We are, therefore, advising you that a formal consultation on the following proposed measures is due to commence on 18 November 2010:

  • The removal of the existing signal controlled (Pelican) crossing, and the associated raised table outside No 174 Grand Drive.
  • Provide a new zebra crossing approximately 17 metres north of the existing Pelican Crossing.
