Proposed pedestrian crossing - London Road, Mitcham

Merton Council has been successful in its bid to Transport for London (TfL) to fund accessibility improvements across the Borough for 2012-13 financial year. As part of this initiative and reported pedestrian safety concerns, this section of London Road, Mitcham, near to The Grange nursery, has been identified as a location suitable  for a signalised pedestrian crossing.

Following comprehensive surveys and investigations, it is proposed to introduce a Puffin type crossing, which detects the presence of both pedestrians and vehicles automatically allowing suitable use of the crossing for the more vulnerable pedestrians, whilst maintaining acceptable traffic flows. This will reduce the risk of personal injury and provide a safer environment for pedestrians, especially those attending the nearby nursery and school in Mitcham Park.

To safely introduce the crossing, certain alterations to the road layout in the vicinity will be required. These include the introduction of a pedestrian island with narrowing of the southbound lane.

What happens next

A statutory consultation is required to introduce the crossing. A Notice of the Council’s intentions to introduce the crossing will be published in the local newspaper and posted on lamp columns in the vicinity. Any comments must be put in writing to the Head of Street Scene and Waste, Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, Surrey, SM4 5DX by no later than 20 September 2012 , quoting reference ES/SGE/LONDONRD PED.

A copy of the Notice and plan identifying the area affected by the proposal can be inspected at Merton Link, Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, Surrey during the Council’s working hours, Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm.
