Proposed alternative to speed cushions - Heath Drive

We have been made aware that the speed cushions are ineffective and do not reduce the speed of vehicles. As a result it is being claimed that motorists frequently travel at high speed. A request has been made to modify the features so as to make them more effective in reducing speed.

Given that any change to the features would not incur additional construction costs, we have agreed to replace the cushions with sinusoidal road humps. These are road humps with a revised profile to improve ride comfort, whilst maintaining their speed reducing effect for all road users including cyclists. These stretch from kerb to kerb. However, it should be noted that these features may cause minor vibrations to adjacent properties if vehicles approach them at inappropriate speed.

To introduce these features instead of the speed cushions, it is necessary to undertake a statutory consultation. This consultation is due to start on 12 July and will conclude on 2 August 2012.

A Notice of our intentions to replace the speed cushions with the road humps will be published in a local newspaper (The Guardian), London Gazette and posted on lamp columns in the vicinity. Representations for and against the proposals described in this Notice must be made in writing.

All representations along with Officers’ comments and recommendations will be presented to the Cabinet Member for Environmental Sustainability and Regeneration. Please note that responses to any representations received will not be made until a final decision is made by the Cabinet Member.

A copy of the proposed Notice, a plan and Statement of Reasons can be inspected at the Merton Link, Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, Surrey, SM4 5DX during normal office hours Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

We will introduce the proposed features only if there is majority in support of the new features; in the absence of support, the speed cushions will be put back. Please note that we cannot offer any other alternative at this time.
