Adults of all ages can need extra support in day-to-day life for various and often complex reasons.

Adult social care is for:

  • adults with physical or learning disabilities
  • adults with physical or mental illnesses
  • older people who require extra support

Types of support

  • Help with personal care, such as eating, washing, or getting dressed
  • Help with domestic tasks, such as cleaning or going to the shops

How support is provided

  • Formal care services, such as care homes or a carer helping in the home. These services are paid for, usually by the local council or through private funds
  • Informal care - family members, neighbours, or friends may provide unpaid care
