WildWays: boosting biodiversity on grass verges

To help boost biodiversity, we're cutting the grass once a year instead of 12 times a year in 14 trial areas.

These 'WildWays' will allow wildflowers to grow, reduce our carbon emissions and provide habitat and nectar for butterflies, bees and other insects. Over time, the variety of wildflowers will increase, either naturally or through seeding, helping to support even more wildlife species.

Our WildWays cover 33,225 sqm of grass – about 11% of the roadside grass area we manage.

We have added appropriate signs on the verges. We mow a strip around the edge of each wild verge more often to define the boundary.
