In its role as ‘Corporate Parent’ Merton Council wants its looked after children and care leavers to have the same opportunities and chances in life, and to achieve the best educational, health and economic outcomes as any parent would wish for their children. And, like any good parent we will assist our young people through higher education or into employment or training opportunities.
In order to ensure the highest quality support and service provision for looked after children and care leavers we have worked with key partners and young people themselves to identify clear strategic objectives which will ensure their best outcomes. A key part of this is ensuring placement stability, which means that the child experiences consistency and continuity of care in one placement and without moves, and ensuring that they have somewhere suitable to live once they leave care. The following strategies set out the full range of objectives that have been identified for looked after children and young people, including clear actions, targets and performance monitoring to ensure that we achieve these aims.
In addition to these we produce an annual
'Sufficiency Strategy' which outlines our strategic approach to securing sufficient accommodation for Looked After Children and Care Leavers, in compliance with the statutory 'sufficiency duty'.
