Petitions

A petition is a request for action signed by more than two people. A petition can relate to anything that will improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of Merton.

It should clearly state what you want to happen.

It should record the name, address and signature of each individual supporting the petition. One person should be clearly marked as the petition organiser. Once submitted you will get confirmation within 15 working days and we will contact relevant councillors.

We will reply in writing and try to respond within 20 working days. All responses will be published in our e-petition database.

There are three ways to submit a petition:

If you would like advice on how to set out your petition please contact us at Getinvolved@merton.gov.uk or telephone 020 8545 3896.

Rejection of petitions

Petitions can be rejected for a number of reasons including:

  • being offensive or abusive
  • not relating to the economic, social and environmental well-being of Merton
  • being unreasonable or unrealistic
  • duplication

Complaints

If you think we haven’t looked at your petition properly you can ask the Overview and Scrutiny Commission to review the process. You must tell them within 28 days of receiving our reply. Contact scrutiny@merton.gov.uk
