Enhanced coronavirus testing in Wimbledon Park area

What you need to do

You need to take a COVID-19 test as soon as possible if you live or work in the Wimbledon Park area, or visit the area for essential activities (such as shopping or to visit a support bubble), are over 16 years old and don't have any coronavirus symptoms.

This is to help us track any potential cases after a confirmed case of the South African variant of COVID-19 was discovered in the area in early February. This is unrelated to the recent enhanced testing in Pollards Hill, which has so far returned no positive tests for the South African variant.

You do not need to change anything else – continue to follow national lockdown rules.

How to get a test if you don't have symptoms

There are 2 ways you can get a test:

  1. Book a test at one of the mobile testing units:
    • Wimbledon Park Golf Club, Home Park Road, SW19 7HR 
    • Car park at the rear of Wickes, Waterside Way SW17 0BW
      Please access the retail park from Waterside Way

    These are open daily, 8am-3pm, from Friday 26 February until Thursday 4 March.
    Pre-booking is required.

  2. Pick up and drop off home testing kits at Christ the King Church Hall, 9 Crescent Gardens, Wimbledon Park, SW19 8AJ.
    Open daily, 8.30am to 6pm, from Monday 1 until Friday 5 March.
    No booking needed.
    Residents who are shielding and cannot seek help to pick up or return a completed test to Christ the King Church Hall, can contact the council to arrange a home test kit to be dropped off and collected from their home. Please call us on 020 8274 5332 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

If you have symptoms

The main symptoms of coronavirus are a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste.

If you have any of these symptoms, you need to get a free NHS test in the normal way and stay at home.

More information

  • The Government has announced new, enhanced testing  after identifying cases of the South African variant of COVID-19 that do not appear to be linked to any recent travel.
  • There is no evidence to show the South African variant of COVID -19 is more dangerous, however it does seem that the variant may spread more easily, so it is important that we find it quickly to stop any local transmission happening.
  • You should continue to follow the national lockdown rules. For example, you may leave your home to shop for basic necessities, or go to work or provide voluntary or charitable services or get a test.
  • This testing programme aims to closely monitor any community spread of this variant and restrict any further transmission through isolating cases, so we can protect the local community.
  • You must continue to attend your vaccine appointments and any urgent medical appointments.
  • We would encourage all those residents who have received their COVID-19 vaccination to take part in this testing programme.
  • If you have had a recent positive PCR or LFT test in the last 90 days, you will not be asked to take part in this enhanced testing programme.
  • The tests for this programme will be sent to the national labs and any positive cases will be genome sequenced, which will help us understand any spread of the virus, and will be followed up by the NHS Test and Trace service.
  • You can book online on someone else's behalf if they can't do so themselves. People who are unable to book online, and don't know someone who can book for them, can call us on 020 8274 5332 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm for help.

Support if you need to self-isolate

Residents who are required to self-isolate can receive local support on access to medicines and food, and may be eligible to receive financial hardship payments.

Citizens Advice Merton and Lambeth are providing advice and support for any residents who need to self-isolate. Advisers can support you with a range of issues including applying for self-isolation payments of up to £500, welfare benefits, employment advice, foodbank and grant referrals and access to local and national government support schemes. Email merton.advice@caml.org.uk with your name, postcode and telephone details, or ring 0808 278 7831 (Freephone), 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
