The river Wandle has had a rich and varied history and has helped to shape the development of Merton. A renowned trout river, it has been the inspiration for generations of artists.
During the 19th century it was one of the most heavily worked rivers in the world, powering the production of flour, snuff, leather, paper and the Arts & Crafts works of William Morris and Arthur Liberty.
