Proposed safety measures - Sandy Lane

Statutory Consultation - 7 November 2013

We have been successful in its bid to Transport for London (TfL) to fund safety and accessibility improvements across the Borough. As part of this initiative the area outside Gorringe Park School in Sandy Lane has been identified for improvements through requests by the school and parents who are concerned about vehicle speeds, inconsiderate parking on the school keep clear zigzags and insufficient footway widths in the vicinity of the school for congregating parents.

It is therefore proposed, as shown on the linked newsletter below, to introduce a 20mph speed limit in part of Sandy Lane between its junctions with Streatham Road and Fernlea Road (including Summerhill Way) along with two speed tables with informal crossing points for pedestrians. The footway will be also be widened on the school side by approximately 1.5 metres with a line of bollards to prevent parking. These proposed measures will encourage slower speeds, provide a safer environment for parents and children and raise awareness of passing motorists.

What happens next

A statutory consultation is required to reduce the speed limit, introduce the speed tables, alter the School Keep Clear markings and introduce ‘At any time’ waiting restrictions. A Notice of the Council’s intentions to introduce these measures will be published in the local newspaper and posted on lamp columns in the vicinity.

Any comments  regarding the proposals must be put in writing to the Head of Street Scene and Waste, Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, Surrey, SM4 5DX by no later than 29 November 2013, quoting reference ES/SGE/SANDY_20mph.

A copy of the Notices and plan identifying the area affected by the proposal can be inspected at Merton Link, Merton Civic Centre, London Road, Morden, Surrey during the Council’s working hours, Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm.

Subject to the outcome of the consultation and Cabinet Member’s approval, the works could be carried out during the February 2014 half term holidays.
