Crossrail 2 is a proposed new underground rail line running across London between Wimbledon and New Southgate/Tottenham Hale with potential ground level links to the wider rail network. This proposal will provide much-needed new rail capacity to support London’s growth.

Merton’s cross-party response to Crossrail 2 proposals (January 2016)
Crossrail 2 is set to be a huge project which will have a significant impact on Wimbledon town centre. In the long-term, Crossrail 2 will bring opportunities to the area. We are a pro-growth borough and want the best for Merton.
All parties at Merton Council support Crossrail 2 in principle, but not at any cost. The council has a duty to represent current businesses and residents of the borough and has significant reservations about the proposals. As they stand at the moment, they will cause an unacceptable level of upheaval and disruption for businesses and residents. The council recognises its duty to represent the people living and working in Merton. The welfare and interests of those who would be directly affected by the works and the eventual development will continue to be its priority.

Safeguarding land consultation (December 2014)
The Department of Transport has started a process to protect (safeguard) the land needed to build the new railway. The consultation began on 20thNovember 2014 and will run until 29th January 2015.

Background
London is projected to grow by two million people by 2031. Transport for London and Network Rail are investing in London’s transport network to accommodate this growth, but without further measures this growth would lead to additional crowding on the network. Crossrail 2 could be operational in the early 2030s but it is essential that work continues now to meet this target so that the future forecasted population and employment growth in London is supported by new transport infrastructure.
During 2013 and 2014 Transport for London held two public consultations on Crossrail 2, asking people if they supported the Metro option or the Regional option and outlining the route.
The Metro option runs from Wimbledon to Alexandra Palace and would offer a high-frequency, underground service through central London
The Regional option would be a combined underground and over ground railway linking to the Metro option. It could operate north from Alexandra Palace along the West Anglia main line, potentially as far as Hertford East in Hertfordshire and south to various locations in south west London and Surrey.
