Merton's Week of Peace

Sunday 19 - Sunday 26 September 2010

Peace Week is an event for the whole community, celebrating diversity, equality and social harmony. It provides an opportunity for people of different backgrounds, ages, faiths and cultures to participate in events that promote peace, community cohesion and community safety.  This year the theme was "giving back".

Peace Week Launch – Wimbledon Piazza
  • Information table promoting peace week events
  • Short speeches by Deputy Mayor of Merton, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Engagement and Equalities, Chief Executive and Borough Commander
  • Samba band performance by school children from St Marks Academy
  • Distribution of Peace Week Cakes
CND Film Screening –Mansell Road
  • Introduction from the Chief Executive of CND and film screening of ‘The Strangest Dream’
Cricket Match – Haydon’s Road recreation ground
  • 20 over cricket match – two teams of six
  • Light refreshments
Peace Walk
  • Walk started at the Peace Garden and went to the Mitcham War Memorial and back to the Peace Garden.
  • Picnic
Be a peace maker in your community
  • Workshop led by Merton and Sutton Mediation to recruit volunteer mediators
Learn to Meditate
  • Two sessions organised by Dorjechang Buddhist Centre
STOP Campaign Workshop – South Wimbledon Youth Centre
  • Talk delivered by Alex Rose from the Solve This Ongoing Problem (STOP) Campaign
  • Young people on reparation attended the event and were invited by Carole Houghton of the Youth Justice Service.
  • Alex shared his experiences of gang culture and the death of his friend Eugene Antrim with the young people and encouraged them to stop their involvement in gangs and knife crime.  The young people were encouraged to be more creative.
Youth Question Time - Intergeneration Centre

  • Feeling safe on the streets and public buses
  • Negative public perception of young people
  • Getting the positive voices of young people heard - influencing local media
  • Activities for young people and how information about activities/events are disseminated to the young
  • Crime and violence against young people
  • positive futures- inspiring young people
  • How to engaging with your local representatives: councillors and MP’s etc
  • How can local young people benefit from the Olympics- 2012 wave of friendship / London ambassador/ Games maker programmes?
  • The role of faith and religion in society, creating peace or promoting differences.
Community Family Fun Day  - Mitcham Fair Green
  • Inter-generational event with performances from the Escape Youth Group, Caribbean songs from the West Indian Federation Family Association. Merton Teachers Choir and many more
  • The Community Safety Reassurance bus and community information stand.
  • Table football game stands
  • Children face-painting

Overall Peace Week was enjoyed by all those who attended the events.

Peace Week Steering Group

Peace Week is organised by a Steering Group of people representing a variety of community groups in Merton.

London Week of Peace

Events in Merton form part of London Week of Peace which is a recognised annual event that is celebrated by all 32 London Boroughs and has the support of the Prime Minister, the Mayor of London and leading government ministers.
