School closures - find out which schools are currently closed
Wimbledon Chase is a primary school for pupils aged 3 - 11. The aim of the school is to provide a caring and stimulating environment in which all children can achieve their full potential. The school has a 52-place nursery and a base for additional learning needs (ALN). In September 2008 the school expanded to three form entry for the Reception intake. This increase in numbers has been made permanent although does not affect pre-existing year groups.
The nursery at Wimbledon Chase is committed to providing a happy, stimulating and challenging environment, where planned activities are set to promote learning and discovery. The children learn through many different experiences and most importantly through play. The nursery follows the foundation stage curriculum.
The ALN base (known as "the Station") has provision for up to 10 pupils across the primary age range. The main aims of the base are: to meet the individual needs of the pupil; to support the pupils ability to access the curriculum; and to ensure that the pupils integrate and participate as fully as possible in all aspects of school life. The pupils who attend the base are members of mainstream classes and follow the National Curriculum alongside their peers. The school also has access to speech and language therapy where this is identified as a need on a pupil's statement.
The school runs a number of schemes, such as a parent and toddler group ("Little Chasers") and provides wraparound care via breakfast and after school clubs, and the Acorn nursery. A strong Parent in Partnership project operates at the school and the Friends' Association (PTA) is very active. In addition, the school encourages its pupils to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, or clubs, including art, board games, recorders, chess, choir, computer club, cooking, drama, football, gardening, homework, library, netball, orchestra, running, tag rugby, street dance, tennis, and yoga.
Wimbledon Chase has been recognised for its high standards of work and was the first school in Merton to achieve Beacon status. The school's work has also been recognised in other areas and has achieved the Gold Sports Mark, Investors in People status and Healthy School status. There is also a thriving school council. Finally, both the school and nursery have an "open door policy" and parents and children are welcome to visit.
