Urgent support

If you need mental health support in a crisis you can contact:

  • the team that already supports you - if you are already a patient and it is between 9am and 5pm
  • South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust - Crisis Line - 0800 028 8000, if it is out of office hours or you are not already a patient. The helpline offers emotional support and advice. (Available 24 hours a day)
  • your GP
  • NHS 111 online or call 111
  • Merton and Sutton councils’ Emergency Out-of-Hours Duty Team - 020 8770 5000 (5pm-8am weekdays, all day weekends)
  • If you are deaf, you can call our Mental Health Support Line using the SignLive video relay service (VRS). On a desktop or laptop register using Facebook, Google or email. On a mobile phone, iPad or tablet download SignLive’s app for free and register. You will then be able to call the Trust for free.

Introduction

You may have poor or fluctuating mental health for many reasons, such as bereavement, work or money worries, big life changes or illness. 

If you are experiencing this you should talk to your GP first. They can often refer you to other professionals. Find a GP (NHS)

There are several services both local and national that can support you to improve your mental health.

Non-emergency support

Merton Uplift is a partnership between the NHS and the voluntary sector and provides support for anyone over 18 who has a mental health or wellbeing need who lives or has a GP in the London Borough of Merton. 

It offers a range of support including rapid access to online cognitive behavioural therapy. You can self-refer on Uplift’s website. 

Recovery Cafés

If you are struggling with your mental health in the evenings or weekends, a Recovery Café can provide a safe and supportive space. Merton’s are in Tooting and Wimbledon. They support adults (aged 18 years +) you can be referred or can just drop in. They provide:

  • group activities
  • one-to-one support 
     
  • chill out space 
     
  • advice, information and signposting 
     
  • hot meals and drinks 
     
  • drop in from local mental health teams

Other adult mental health services

Merton Assessment Team

Merton Accessment Team accepts self-referral and referral from family members who are concerned about someone’s deterioration in mental health. The team is based at Wilson Hospital, Cranmer Road, Mitcham, CR4 4TP.

Recovery and support team

There are community-based mental health services for people experiencing severe and persistent mental illness. Treatment and support is offered for a range of conditions, including severe depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, mood disorders, personality and behaviour disorders. There are teams covering Morden, Mithcam and Wimbledon.

Other local services

Local services offer support with a variety of mental health issues, many are based at the Wilson Hospital in Mitcham. Mental health difficulties covered include:

  • severe depression
  • social anxiety
  • schizophrenia
  • mood, personality, eating and behaviour disorders
  • hoarding 
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • body dysmorphia
  • psychosis
  • dementia
  • mental health crisis

The South West London and St George’s Mental health Trust can support people in their homes and in the community. It also has specialist teams for those with sensory impairments, learning disabilities and older people.

South West London Recovery College, Springfield Hospital, Tooting offers wellbeing courses for current service users, anyone discharged within the past 12 months and their family, friends or carers. Telephone 020 3513 5818 for more information.

If you support someone with a mental health condition you may be entitled to a carer’s assessment to see if we can support you. You may also be entitled to carer's allowance
