If you have no outside space we may supply you with clear bags for your paper and card.

  • egg boxes
  • toilet and kitchen roll tubes

 

  • Tear up and flatten large boxes
  • No disposable paper masks
  • No food-soiled pizza boxes
  • No food or drink cartons
  • Put shredded paper in a paper envelope or paper bag (this stops it from clogging the sorting machines)
  • No tissue paper
  • No plastic bags

 

Purple bags or communal recycling bins

If you have no outside space we may supply you with purple bags for your recycling.

If you have no outside space, you may need to use black sacks for your rubbish, or we may supply you with red striped bags.

Non-recyclable household waste

  • Tie your sacks securely
  • No building or DIY waste
  • No clinical waste such as syringes, dressings and pads
  • No garden waste - we offer a separate garden waste collection service or you can take it to the Garth Road recycling centre (tip)
  • No hazardous waste such as vehicle batteries, gas cylinders, paints, chemicals, oils, asbestos, tyres, electrical appliances, fluorescent tubes and light bulbs.
  • No dead animals – we offer a collection service for dead animals
  • No paint tins - allow the paint to dry before taking tins to the Garth Road recycling centre (tip)
  • No commercial waste
  • No cooking oil - this can be recycled at the Garth Road recycling centre (tip)

 

Tied carrier bags (textiles and shoes)

Put textiles and shoes in one tied plastic carrier bag beside or on top of your bins or boxes. Look up your collection days to find out if you have a textiles collection: it will be listed as a separate service.

What goes in Please...
  • Clothes
  • Linens
  • Shoes (tied in pairs)
  • Clean, dry items only
  • No more than one bag per collection
  • Use only normal-sized carrier bags: no large bags or sacks
  • No cushions
  • No duvets
  • No curtains

 

Untied carrier bags (batteries)

Put batteries in one untied plastic bag beside or on top of your bins or boxes. Look up your collection days to find out if you have a batteries collection: it will be listed as a separate service.

Types of plastic and how to dispose of them

We accept We do not accept
  • bottles including water bottles and milk bottles
  • tubs including yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, cream cheese tubs, fruit punnets and pots from dips and sauces
  • household products including cleaning products, bleach bottles, cleaners with trigger spray, liquid soap bottles, shampoo and conditioner bottles
  • plastic sheeting around new furniture
  • polystyrene disc under pizzas
  • plastic film lid to film container
  • plastic prepared salad bag
  • plastic rings on multipack of cans
  • plastic pouches of baby or pet food
  • plastic carrier bags - many supermarkets collect these

 

Other ways to dispose of your rubbish

You can take many types of waste to the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre at Garth Road or local recycling banks.

Special collection services are available for clinical waste and hazardous waste.
