Your duty of care

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 places a duty of care on all businesses to manage and dispose of their waste responsibly. Your business rates do not include the cost of your recycling and waste disposal. You must ensure your rubbish is collected by an authorised waste carrier. You should keep a copy of your waste transfer paperwork for a minimum of two years.

This means waste from commercial premises should not be:

  • placed in household bins,
  • taken to a council managed recycling site,
  • or taken to a household waste recycling centre.

Duty of Care - a non direct debit will cost £160 per annum

Did you know...?

It is an offence to put recycling or waste from a business into a public recycling bank, no matter how small the amount.

Businesses could be fined up to £50,000.

Your legal responsibilities
