Water quality and water pollution

Swimming pool and spa water

There are a large number of swimming and spa pools within the borough that are either run on behalf of Merton Council or are attached to schools, hotels or health clubs. We visit these pools routinely to make sure that they are being run in accordance with industry guidance. Please contact us if you have any concerns about them.

Occasionally outbreaks of illnesses have been linked with pool water, you can help protect yourself by following the guidance in our leaflet:

Protect your family from ill health by healthy swimming

Drinking water

If you have a complaint about your drinking water, you should contact your water company directly. They have a duty to investigate your complaint and put things right. You should only contact us if you continue to experience problems.

The majority of Merton's residents receive their mains or tap water from Thames Water, apart from a small corner of Morden that is supplied by Sutton and East Surrey Water. Your water bill will identify who your supplier is.

Saving water

Both water companies provide information and give ideas as to how you can save water;

The Environment Agency is responsible for maintaining or improving the quality of fresh, marine, surface and underground water in England and Wales. They aim to prevent or reduce the risk of water pollution wherever possible, and to ensure that pollution is cleaned up.
