Historic parks and gardens

the white bridge in Morden Hall ParkHistoric parks and gardens contribute to the setting of listed buildings and are valued as ‘works of art’ for their horticultural interest or association with a notable person or event. We need to ensure that they are recognised, conserved and protected.

English Heritage register

English Heritage maintain a list of historic parks and gardens of in England. Entries are graded I, II* (II star), or II. There are four entries which relate to sites in Merton.

  1. Wimbledon Park  - Grade II*
  2. Cannizaro Park - Grade II*
  3. Morden Hall Park - Grade II
  4. South Park Gardens - Grade II

Parks and gardens listed in English Heritage's Register do not have legal protection comparable to that which applies to listed buildings, but the council must consult interested expert parties on planning applications affecting them and their setting.

London Inventory of Historic Green Spaces

A further 46 parks, gardens, cemeteries, and other green spaces within Merton are included in the London Inventory of Historic Green Spaces compiled by the London Parks and Gardens Trust.
