Merton Dementia Hub

Merton Dementia Hub is for Merton residents who have been diagnosed with dementia, and their families, friends and carers. It aims to provide support throughout a person’s dementia journey. It holds activities within a specially designed, dementia-friendly building, has a cafe and a large sensory garden. 

It is run by the Alzheimer’s Society in partnership with South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust, our Adult Social Care department, other health services, and voluntary and community organisations.

Advisors can give you information on a range of issues including: 

  • how to get help locally 
  • staying independent
  • adaptations for your home 
  • benefits advice 
  • respite for carers 
  • financial and legal issues 
  • specialist help for the under 65s

Hub support groups and activities

The hub runs several groups and activities for those with dementia and their carers, families and friends. They include: 

For carers, relatives and friendsFor people living with dementia
  • Peer Support Group, in-person and evening online sessions: a welcoming and safe space where relatives can talk to others with similar experiences of dementia (monthly on a Monday and Wednesday) 
  • Carers' Information and Support Programme (CrISP): a 4-week programme introducing carers to dementia, includes managing changes as the illness progresses. It is particularly for those caring for someone who is newly diagnosed (Wednesdays) 
  • Strategies For Relatives (START): a course for dealing with difficult behaviour and teaches stress reduction techniques (weekly) 
  • Tuesdays - Activity Group: art, crafts and quizzes, discussions
  • Wednesdays - Activity Group: reminiscence session on local history 
  • Wednesdays - Singing for the Brain: sing-along sessions led by a professional musician 
  • Wednesdays - Love to Move: seated exercise programme to music
  • Thursdays - Musicians’ Concert: live music with professional musicians (bi-monthly) 
  • Thursdays -Merton Plays: writing stories and poems, with Daisy from Wimbledon Youth Theatre Group 
  • Fridays - Feel Good Fridays: music and exercise led by a professional dancer 
  • Fridays - Table Tennis with Tom
  • Saturdays - Raynes Park Café: tea, chat and activities (last Saturday of the month)

Merton Dementia Health Suite: offers general health checks from One Merton, hairdressing, audiology checks, beauty treatments and chiropody (Tuesdays). Telephone for appointments: 020 8687 0922

Monday Memory Clinic: assessment, diagnosis and follow up appointments with consultants and nurses from Merton Community Mental Health Team (weekly)

How to make referrals

The hub accepts referrals from GPs, health and social care professionals and memory clinics. You can also self-refer. Telephone: 020 8687 0922 (Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm) or email merton@alzheimers.org.uk

Other useful services

Merton Older People's Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) supports people over the age of 65 with dementia or other mental health decline and those over the age of 75 with a mental illness such as depression. Telephone 020 3513 5000 for more information.

Council tax reduction

If you have a diagnosis of dementia you may be entitled to a reduction in your council tax bill. 

Eligibility criteria:

  • If you are living alone you may be entitled to 100% off under the Class U Exemption 
  • If you are living with a carer you may be entitled to 50% discount 
  • If you are living with your partner you may be entitled to 25% discount 

How to apply for the reduction 

You will need to supply the name of your GP who must confirm that you have a diagnosis of dementia. Then you can:

Making Merton a dementia-friendly borough

Are you a local business, community group or faith group? Do you want to do something to support making Merton a dementia-friendly borough? Being a member involves making a commitment to take three actions to support people living with dementia, for example, asking your staff to attend an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends Awareness Session.
