Intergenerational activities and the Acacia Intergenerational Centre

Merton is privileged to be the site for the first purpose-built intergenerational centre in the UK. The new Acacia Intergenerational Centre opened at Eastfields, Mitcham in February 2010.  This exciting new building will be the thriving centre of intergeneratonial activity across the whole borough.

So what is intergenerational activity?

Intergenerational activity brings together people of different ages – children, young people, adults and older adults - in positive, planned activities designed to bridge gaps between generations.

It is an approach which can provide new ways of working to address a great many issues, e.g. health, learning, skills exchange, community safety and fear of crime, resolving disputes, cultural activity and heritage. For a fuller definition please see link below

What are the benefits of intergenerational activity?

  • Provides opportunities to learn and exchange experiences, knowledge, cultural traditions and skills
  • Encourages community involvement and promote social inclusion.
  • Helps to strengthen communities by dispelling inaccurate stereotypes and promoting mutual respect and understanding between people of different generations and backgrounds
  • Intergenerational activity can also be a very rewarding and most of all fun!
