

Merton's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) forum meets every 3 months and provides a platform for LGBT people to engage with the council and other relevant agencies on matters of interest or concern to them. The forum is open to LGBT people who live, work, or spend time in Merton and seeks to provide support, better dialogue between stakeholders and increased community awareness of LGBT issues.
'To mark IDAHO Day 2012, and to raise awareness about Hate Crime in general, Merton LGBT Forum have organised a screening of the movie "The Laramie Project" in the Council Chamber, Merton Civic Centre, London Road Morden on Thursday, 17 May 2012 from 6PM.
The Laramie Project is an award-winning drama from HBO set in the Wyoming town of Laramie it looks at the impact on a small community of the hate crime motivated murder of a gay student, Matthew Shepard.
The film screening will be preceded by the opportunity to hear from Merton residents who have been victims of hate crime themselves. Police officers from Merton's Community Safety Unit will also be on hand to provide information and offer advice on the reporting of hate crime.
Admission to this event is free and open to all.
The International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia (IDAHO) is designed to raise awareness of the impact of prejudice and discrimination on the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people throughout the world and also on the lives of their families, friends and colleagues.
It is celebrated annually on the 17th May, which is the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s May 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Events to mark IDAHO Day are currently held in over 70 countries around the world and in 2011 there were over 150 IDAHO Day events in the UK, with a similar number planned for this year.
