Birth registration and certificates

On this page

Where to register

A birth must be registered within 42 days, in the district where the baby was born.

The London Borough of Merton does not have a maternity hospital. If the baby was born in a local hospital please contact the appropriate register office:

If it is difficult for you to visit the register office in the district in which the birth occurred you may attend another register office to give a birth declaration. This declaration will then be sent to the district where the birth occurred and the registration will be completed there.

To register a birth that occurred in Merton you will need to book an appointment at Merton Register Office:

Who should go

It is important that the correct person or people register the birth. This is usually a parent or parents, but please read Who Should Go to Register? (General Register Office website) for full details.

What to bring

It is helpful if you can bring your passport or birth certificate and if married your marriage certificate to the birth registration. This is not essential but will help us to ensure your correct details are registered.

Certificates

There are two types of birth certificate:

  • the short certificate, which contains only the baby’s details
  • the full certificate, which also contains the parents’ details

After you have registered the birth, your baby will be issued with a short birth certificate for free. If the birth was in Merton and you register the birth in Merton, you will receive a short birth certificate straight away. Otherwise you will receive a short birth certificate in a few days.

You can buy a full birth certificate from Merton Register Office at any time (see prices below).

You can buy a copy of a birth certificate online from the General Register Office if the birth was registered more than 6 months ago.
