Neighbourhood Watch is the largest community safety organisation in the country with an estimated 8 million members. The scheme was originally set up to help reduce household burglary, but now also deals with anti-social behaviour and environmental crime like graffiti and fly-tipping.
How the scheme helps community safety
Living in a Neighbourhood Watch area can help reduce crime and the fear of crime by:
- improving home security
- encouraging greater vigilance
- ensuring suspicious incidents are reported to the police
- fostering a community spirit
Merton Neighbourhood Watch
Merton Neighbourhood Watch is managed by the Merton Neighbourhood Watch Association which is made of volunteer Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators. They work in partnership with Merton Police and Merton Council who provide an officer who manages the scheme.
